About Almitra Sustainables

About Us

Our story

The Almitra name comes from Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet, where Almitra is the one character who first believes in the prophet's teachings. Anamika Sengupta and Biplab Dutta borrowed it in 2014 for Almitra Tattva, the handwoven babywearing brand they started after the birth of their son, when they couldn't find a natural, well-made baby wrap and decided to make their own instead.

Four years on, the same problem kept showing up outside babywearing too: toothbrushes, kitchen scrubbers, cleaning brushes, almost all of it plastic, almost all of it hard to avoid. In 2018 they started Almitra Sustainables to close that gap, choosing the material and the maker closest to nature over the fastest factory line, and pointed it at the kitchen, the bathroom, the cleaning cupboard, the wardrobe.

What we make

Today that means more than 40 products across five categories: coir and bamboo personal care (toothbrushes, razors, combs, loofahs), kitchen and cleaning tools (scrub brushes, bottle cleaners, utensil scrubbers), reusable bags, festive gift hampers, and Minimals, our line of handwoven khadi apparel. Every product is vegan, cruelty-free, made without child labor, and shipped without plastic packaging.

Where it's made

Most of our coir range comes from the Coir Cluster in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, a group of rural artisans who turn coconut husk into brushes, scrubbers, and mats by hand, using skills passed down through generations. About 80% of the people making our coir products are local women, and that work is the reason this side of the business exists at all. It gives their craft a market beyond the cluster; it gives us something no factory line can copy.

None of this works without the people who choose it, every time they need a toothbrush, a scrubber, or a gift that doesn't cost the planet something. If that's you, welcome. Shop the range, follow along on Instagram, or start with one small swap. That's usually how everyone here got started too.
